The bottle gourd [Lagenaria siceraria (Mol.)stand], known as lauki in Hindi is an important vegetable grown extensively throughout our country. The fruits in the green tender stage are used as vegetable and for making raita, pakora and also for preparation of some aweets. The hard shell of the mature and dry fruits are used as watertjugs, domestic and for making some musical instruments, floats for fishing nets and some other purposes. The fruit pulp, the twigs and leaves have some nutritive and medicinal values.
