The garlic (Allium sativum L.), known as Lahsun in Hindi is one of the important bulb crops grown in India. It is also important foreign exchange earner. It is used as a spice or condiment. It is rich in proteins, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and carbohydrates. The pungency in garlic is due to volatile oil (diallyl-disulfide). The garlic is carminative and is a gastric stimulant, aids in digestion and absorption of food. The inhalation of garlic oil or garlic juice has generally been recommended in cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, rheumatism, sterility, impotency, cough and red eyes.
